I have always been a huge fan of adbusters ... I love the magazine, the philosophy, the design, and most of all, their "anti-ad" campaigns. The adbusters campaign that has probably received the most attention over the years is "Buy Nothing Day." Typically taking place on the day after Thanksgiving, BND asks that consumers trade in their Black Friday habits and observe a day of no spending ... the objective being to instead spend time with family, friends, or in nature.
So, with our record low holiday sales this year, can we say that "it worked?" Somehow, it doesn't seem to be the case. People haven't just cut back on their mall grazing ... they seem to have cut back on doing much of anything.
More later. gotta run.
